How much paint should I buy?

How Much Paint?
A liter of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® covers approximately 120-150 square feet.
Think one china cabinet or 2 average size dressers.  Your painting style and finish you choose will also dictate how much paint you need.  This paint is so versatile, you can paint a very smooth finish by brushing and feathering your surface (and use less) or use thicker layers to build texture (and use more paint).
A small sample pot is 1/8 of a can of paint, so roughly 15-18 sq. ft.  That's enough for a very small chair or side table.  Its also a perfect amount for tinting your liters for a new color.   We usually apply two coats with an hour or two between coats.

     Applying the Wax
We love the Chalk Paint® Wax. It adds durability, deepens the colors and gives a very slight sheen. Its a beautiful furniture finish and lovely to clean up or repair.  It’s easy to get sensational results – just use a cotton rag, or your Chalk Paint® Wax Brush, to get it into corners and crevices. Allow your paint to dry -3 hours or even overnight.

As a very rough guide, you will need one 500ml tin of wax for every 3-4 litres of paint.  It's never a bad thing to have a little wax left over for touching up. With the lid tightly on, it will last indefinitely.

  • When you apply the wax, ‘push’ it into your Chalk Paint® for the best results. Use good pressure but don't press so hard that you tire yourself out. Think hand cream – and apply it in the same way! Remove excess wax as you go with a clean cloth. (after every 2-3 square feet)  Once you apply and you remove the excess wax, allow to dry. Apply a second coat the exact same way.
  • Don’t buff yet - leave the wax to dry for 24 hours before buffing with a clean lint free cloth, or leave as it is for a matte effect.  Buffing will give you more sheen.
  • Work small areas at a time, so the wax doesn’t dry before you get to work it in.

    Brushes and Tools
To get started, an Annie Sloan® Chalk Paint brush is a really great all around brush. It is rounded, natural bristle and a joy to work with.  It comes in small (what we call regular), medium and large sizes.  The regular size will do most projects, medium is great for larger areas like large dressers and kitchen or bath cabinets, and the large is great for your largest projects and wall surfaces.  Annie also has a more conventional synthetic brush in two sizes to use on smoother surfaces.

An Annie Sloan® wax brush is wonderful!  It helps you get the wax on evenly and efficiently and keeps you from using too much wax.   If you'd rather skip a wax brush, you can always use soft rags - one to apply and a couple clean cloths to help you remove the excess wax.

And speaking of rags, for your project use as lint free as possible.  If your paint is white, don't use dark rags and vice versa.  We sell cloth rags -  5 for $5 that are nice and absorbent and come in light or dark colors.  You can rewash and reuse - they are great.

What is Annie Sloan® Lacquer?
This year Annie came out with a water based lacquer as a alternative to the wax.  If you like a higher sheen and want to brush on your top coat, it is a nice change.  Its also a nice finis for lighter colored table tops and cabinets. The lacquer comes in Gloss and Matte.  If you want a matte finish on a dark color, you will need to buy both.  Apply one coat of Gloss and the second coat as Matte.  It just works and it works really well. On medium and light colors, two coats of either Gloss or Matte is all you need.
